Corporate Sustainability Committee

Gannett Fleming has always operated with a focus on sustainability. In 2010, our firm brought our environmental and social programs under a formal Corporate Sustainability umbrella. At the beginning of 2010, the Corporate Sustainability Committee formalized our approach to sustainability by setting goals and measuring our impact.

Our annual ESG report demonstrates how we balance complex and interrelated social, environmental, and financial factors in our client projects and internal activities.

We audit our progress toward achieving quantifiable goals to reduce waste, energy, water consumption, and environmental impacts associated with travel and purchasing through this annual reporting process.

Where your needs intersect with the natural environment, we have the expertise to support your projects.

Our engineering and environmental consultants offer practical and technically sound environmental and regulatory solutions to help you solve your most complex geological and environmental challenges. Excellence in Sustainability

  • ISI is a non-profit leadership organization dedicated to developing and administering a sustainability rating system for infrastructure. Gannett Fleming started as a charter member in 2011 and continues to be actively involved with the organization.

Over the years, hundreds of our employees have pursued ISI’s Envision™ Sustainability Professional (ENV SP) accreditation. Today we have more than 100 ENV SPs.

  • GEMI provides a forum for organizations across business sectors to work together to address strategic and tactical issues impacting corporate environmental, health, and safety activities.

Gannett Fleming Senior Vice President and Director of Private Sector Services Mark Johnson was named chair of the Global Environmental Management Initiative’s (GEMI) board of directors for 2021.

  • The APTA Sustainability Commitment recognizes members who commit to becoming more sustainable in their operations and practices, pursuing stringent requirements to reach the various levels of commitment outlined.

With our first submission, we reached APTA Sustainability Commitment Bronze recognition. We know we can do even better and are actively pursuing higher levels of recognition.

  • This Council’s mission is to change the way buildings and communities are designed, built, and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible focus. They manage LEED® certification, the most widely used green building certification in the world.

We are proud to be home to many LEED accredited professionals throughout the years. Today we have more than 70 LEED professionals.

Focused on Results

Our Corporate Sustainability Committee has led the charge on more significant corporate-wide initiatives and empowered regional offices to pursue sustainability initiatives at their local level. Programs include:

  • Commuter trip reduction program.
  • Composting.
  • Creating gardens.
  • Donating electronics to emergency shelters.
  • Installing reverse osmosis water dispensers.
  • Recycling.
  • Replacing disposable silverware with sustainable options.

Significant Sustainability Initiatives

  • In conjunction with our real estate partners, we have amended our standard lease inquiry document for new office leases. The revised lease inquiries will help the decision-makers evaluate and select new office spaces that incorporate achievable and innovative sustainable features and amenities appropriate for each unique office location.

  • In 2010 we established a metrics program with our formal sustainability commitment. We consider our metrics as the backbone of our sustainability program to benchmark our impacts, track our progress, support establishing meaningful goals, and hold ourselves accountable. The metrics program initially tracked natural gas, electricity, and water usage as well as recycling and solid waste disposal. It has continued to expand since its inception to include office supply usage, e-waste, vehicle mileage, air mileage, printing, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission calculations.

  • The strategic sourcing process gives our offices the ability to work exclusively with one vendor to handle the procurement of office supplies, products, and furniture. As a result, we realize cost reductions from contractual pricing and reduced administrative burden associated with accounts payable, eliminate unnecessary office-supply purchases and waste, and are better equipped to monitor our cleaning product purchases, ensuring we use environmentally-friendly supplies. Also, the vendors provide monthly metrics that enable us to measure the climate impact associated with our office supply usage.

  • Using smart building technology, we are improving our facilities’ environmental footprint based on performance. In real-time, we can track the use of lights, HVACs, and other equipment used throughout our facilities and determine replacement based on actual use, not an arbitrary “replace by” date.

  • As a firm, we are pursuing practices to reduce our carbon footprint associated with document production. We will only produce project documentation in hard copies if our client specifically requests it.

Environmental Sustainability Policy

Gannett Fleming will take significant and lasting steps to minimize adverse environmental impacts and conserve natural resources in our activities, projects, and work processes. In our operations, we will:

  • Increase the recycling of supplies and materials.
  • Reduce the use of natural resources.
  • Raise environmental awareness among our employees.

We will also:

  • Minimize energy use in our projects.
  • Respect the natural environment.
  • Reuse materials.
  • Decrease negative impacts on the environment.

Gannett Fleming and our employees will meet the needs of the present without compromising future generations.
