“I most attribute my professional success to my curiosity. It propels me to acquire more knowledge, explore new and different perspectives, and expand the skills in my toolkit.”

When accounting courses piqued her interest at Elon University in North Carolina, Becky Rahn dove in headfirst and never looked back. She now manages Gannett Fleming’s Accounts Payable group, directs the day-to-day cash management and treasury management operations, serves as the principal Accounting Department contact for the firm’s international operations, has become a Certified Treasury Professional (CTP) and a Registered Global Credit Professional (RGCP), and enjoys developing the skills and talents of her employees. Having dedicated nearly 23 years to the firm, Becky is not only loyal; she’s a go-getter, a lifelong learner, a gifted listener, and a “big picture” thinker.

We asked Becky a few questions to get to know her:

What behavior or personality trait do you most attribute your professional success to and why?

If I had to pick one thing, it would probably be my curiosity. It propels me to acquire more knowledge, explore new and different perspectives, and expand the skills in my toolkit.

What’s your favorite hobby?

I would like for traveling to be my favorite hobby, but at this time of my life and with the current circumstances, I would say it is probably reading. I like biographies, memoirs about interesting people from all parts of the world, spy thrillers, and historical fiction. I just finished reading Spying on the South, a nonfiction book about Frederick Olmsted, the famous landscape architect who designed Central Park. It chronicles his travels throughout the South during a polarized time in U.S. history pre-Civil War. Tony Horwitz, in the current day, travels the same path and visits some of the same places as Frederick. It was an interesting glimpse into the communities he visits and a reminder of how American culture is truly a diverse mix of customs and traditions from nearly every region of the world.

How does Gannett Fleming support your continued learning or encourage personal growth?

Gannett Fleming has been very supportive throughout my career. As a young professional and mother, I was able to switch from full-time to part-time work for many years to care for my two children. Also, with my manager’s support, I earned and continue to maintain my Certified Treasury Professional (CTP) and Registered Global Credit Professional (RGCP) designations. Additionally, because I expressed interest in our international business operations, in 2014, I had the opportunity to travel to our Doha, Qatar, office. Most recently, in 2019, I participated in the Gannett Fleming Leadership Academy, where I learned a great deal and met other emerging leaders in different business groups from a variety of locations. And lastly, I look forward to participating in Gannett Fleming’s Connected Relationships™ Mentoring Program as a mentee and, perhaps one day, as a mentor.

If you could pick up a new skill in an instant, what would it be?

Fluency in at least one language other than English.

What makes you proud to work here?

The people! We have a fantastic group of employees and a forward-thinking leadership team. I’ve never been as proud of Gannett Fleming as I have been through the course of this past year. The adversity we faced together created a greater sense of community and sparked more organizational improvements.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?

In the words of my 15-year-old daughter, I’m a “music connoisseur.” I like most genres, new and old, and all different kinds of artists. In my spare time, I like to curate songs for my playlist. I try to avoid songs that are common or heard often and spend time finding new and unique artists. In addition to listening to music, I have studied piano and voice over the years. When my daughter finishes high school and heads off to college, I plan to take a deeper dive into my piano studies.
