“Addressing my clients with confidence and understanding is essential. I come prepared for meetings, present myself as a resource, and demonstrate that we are a valuable asset to their success.”

Construction professional. Vice president. Wife. Mother. Rugby player. Attorney. Sharon Berger holds many titles, and she’s determined to excel in each role. Whether she’s working to secure a New York City School Construction Authority contract, planning her son’s next adventure, or taking continuing education courses at night to remain a member of the New York State Bar, she brings her very best and is driven to succeed.

We asked Sharon a few questions to get to know her and her story:

What personality trait do you most attribute your professional success to and why?

My ability to listen and quickly adapt to each of my clients’ unique needs has allowed me to easily connect with and solve their challenges. Developing trust from the start has made even the shortest working relationships feel as though they were established years ago. Addressing my clients with confidence and understanding is one way to build that foundation; I come prepared for meetings, present myself as a resource, and demonstrate that we are a valuable asset to their success.

What’s a mistake you made early on in your career, and what did you learn from it?

As a young, ambitious person, I wanted to check skills off the list and move on to the next item – essentially move up the ladder. I didn’t truly understand and appreciate the impact and benefits that come along with years of experience. In hindsight, listening and absorbing information from my colleagues with more experience, as well as spending years in the trenches – literally when it comes to ground-up construction and underground subway work – was the key to my advancement.

If you could write a book about your life, what would the title be and why?

I’ve played rugby for about 24 years, and so the title of my book would be, “From the Pitch to the Office” – the pitch being the rugby field. It would focus on the skills and lessons I’ve learned from my favorite team sport and how they translate to my career in construction (sans the tackling!).

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?

My wife and I adopted our son, Dylan, through a “stork drop” situation. We went through the approval process to become adoptive parents, which usually takes a few months to complete, and then you anxiously wait for a baby. For us, we waited longer than usual so we were thrilled to finally receive the call confirming we were approved, but the phone conversation didn’t end there. We were told there was a baby boy, just four days old, waiting for us to be his mommies. To say it was a hectic first few months would be an understatement as we weren’t prepared with a car seat, bassinet, or even diapers. However, our family, community, and Amazon Prime really came through. Now, Dylan is five years old and obsessed with Elmo, cars, and trains. And his mommies… well, we’re obsessed with him!
