Meeting Power Delivery Needs

NEW 230KV TRANSMISSION LINE HELPS ENERGY COMPANY IMPROVE RELIABILITY AND CAPACITY

Serving 6 million customers from the Jersey Shore to the Ohio Valley, FirstEnergy Corporation continues to modernize its infrastructure to meet 21st century demands. Gannett Fleming is supporting this effort through ongoing substation engineering design services. The project covers the full range of activities, including electrical, structural, and civil design work.

What We Did

Our Power team will design modifications to the Jersey Central Power & Light Montville and Whippany substations to accommodate a new 230 kilovolt (kV) transmission line between the sites. The projects involve the installation of a new 230 kV circuit breaker into an existing ring bus at each station, as well as relay and protection upgrades.

Key Features

  • Work performed in accordance with FirstEnergy’s Substation Engineering Standards & Practices.
  • The new line positions will consist of one 230 kV circuit breaker and associated disconnect switches; three capacitor voltage transformers (CVT); three surge arrestors; one line-termination structure; bus supports, electrical conductors, and protective relaying; and control, metering, and communication equipment.
  • Tasks include removing primary and backup relay connections to existing 230 kV breaker current transformers (CT) and reconnecting to new breaker CTs for line protection.
  • Work involves adding new analog and digital channels to the existing IDM #1 at Whippany to monitor the new Whippany-Montville 230 kV line and verifying the voltage and current analog inputs have the correct polarity.

Outcomes

  • Support ongoing system reliability and capacity needs.
  • Adherence to latest industry codes and experience.
