REBUILT STATION MEETS THE NEEDS OF TODAY’S TRAVELER WHILE REFLECTING A COMMUNITY’S SPIRIT AND CHARACTER

Communities across Long Island are being transformed as part of the $150 million Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Enhanced Station Initiative (ESI). The program involves upgrading rail stations to enrich the customer experience and support the economic development of Long Island and the region. The village of Syosset, on the LIRR’s Port Jefferson Branch, has seen its station completely rebuilt as part of the ESI program. Improvements at the Syosset Station were designed to reflect the history and character of the community while significantly enhancing the station environment for 6,000 travelers each weekday.

Gannett Fleming was selected as the designer of record to rebuild the Syosset Station and modernize four other LIRR facilities. In this role, our firm led station improvement design and rebranding as well as construction oversight services, delivering the project on time and on budget under an aggressive schedule.

What We Did

The new station features a full glass façade along Jackson Avenue to create a light-filled interior space. Brick façades adorn the rest of the building. An A-frame roof, tiled with wood on the underside and sheltering an expansive seating area, gives the station a commanding presence and reinvigorates its status as a vital community hub.

The installation of USB charging stations, technology counters, free public Wi-Fi, and high-efficiency lighting meets the needs of today’s traveler. Upgraded restrooms, waiting room seating, and HVAC systems improve passenger comfort. Wayfinding upgrades included digital wall displays, improved signage, and digital information kiosks to provide clear, seamless directions. The stainless steel and Plexiglas sculpture “Sail,” commissioned by Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Arts & Design and installed near the station entrance, serves as a neighborhood beacon for travelers.
