Airport Road Odlum Storm Management Pond in the Region of Peel, Canada.

Region of Peel Airport Road Widening

Our Client’s Challenge

Airport Road is a major urban transportation corridor named after its proximity and connection to Toronto Pearson International Airport at its southern limits. Also designated as Peel Regional Road 7, it provides an important route for commuters and other residential areas in the cities of Brampton and Mississauga in the Greater Toronto Area.

The road passes through industrial, commercial, and residential areas, providing connections to shopping centers, hotels, restaurants, and other amenities. Airport Road must be widened from four to six lanes to accommodate current and future traffic demand caused by continued growth in the Region of Peel and the city of Brampton.

Our Solution

The Region of Peel has retained Gannett Fleming to provide detailed design, contract preparation, and construction administration services for a road bridge rehabilitation project that widens Airport Road from Braydon Boulevard to Countryside Drive in the city of Brampton. The corridor features a melting pot of stakeholders, including:

  • The city of Brampton.
  • Environmental agencies.
  • Transit agencies.
  • Residents and businesses.
  • Developers.
  • Third-party utility companies.

Our team is collaborating with all project stakeholders to ensure their ideas are addressed in developing balanced solutions.

One key project aspect is to minimize impacts during construction by providing connectivity for all transportation modes through staging operations, including:

  • General vehicles.
  • Heavy vehicles.
  • Buses.
  • Pedestrians.
  • Cyclists.
  • Those with accessibility needs.

Our team will also work diligently to maintain access to all residential, commercial, and other amenities through the corridor during project construction.

Our design includes a low-impact development (LID) plan to meet stringent regional and regulatory requirements for predevelopment hydrology management practices within a developed roadway corridor. These LID practices include linear and centralized facilities, including bioswales, infiltration trenches, and enhanced grass swales in the existing drainage network.

Key Features

  • Expands roadway from four to six lanes.
  • Uses a LID plan to meet stringent regional and regulatory requirements.
  • Construction staging keeps traffic flowing and businesses open.

Outcomes

  • Improved transportation operations through the addition of two traffic lanes in each direction.
  • Enhances general streetscape environment for all transportation modes.
  • Improves safety for all road users.
  • Innovative design and collaboration with environmental agencies minimize impacts on the natural environment.
