Corn Receives ASCE’s Edmund Friedman Young Engineer Award for Professional Achievement

Recognizing her boundless enthusiasm for engineering and public service, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) named Structural Engineer Aimee Corn, PE, winner of its Edmund Friedman Young Engineer Award for Professional Achievement. The award is given to younger members of ASCE for:
- Advancing the profession.
- Demonstrating technical competence, high character, and integrity.
- Contributing to public service outside their careers.
An active member of ASCE for over 10 years, Corn has amassed a substantial chronology of involvement, leadership, and service. She served as secretary, vice president, and president of the Colorado chapter of ASCE’s Structural Engineering Institute (SEI), where she completed communication and member participation initiatives and received the Chapter of the Year Award.
In 2018, she became the youngest ASCE member to serve on SEI’s national board of governors. As co-chair of the SEI Mentorship Committee, she produced videos to inspire others to serve as mentors and mentees, increasing the number of mentorship pairs. She also is a member of the Student Initiatives Committee to fund student conference scholarships.
Corn lends her time and talents to other professional organizations, including the United States Society on Dams (USSD), for which she speaks at conferences and serves on committees, including the Conference Planning Committee, which she chairs.
“With considerable skill, passion, and humility, Aimee has established herself within the civil engineering community, and specifically within the community of those of us who work on our nation’s dams, as one of our leaders. Very few others bring the uniting spirit and desire to collaboratively address the far-reaching issues we face that Aimee regularly brings,” said Del Shannon, PE, immediate past president of USSD.
At Gannett Fleming, Corn was named a winner of the 2018 Innovation Challenge for dam real-time data analytics and performance-based testing, demonstrating her commitment to helping clients thrive in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. She serves as vice chair of Connected Women at Gannett Fleming™, an employee resource group creating a culture that empowers, supports, and mentors women.
Corn was nominated for this ASCE award by Tiffany Adams, PhD, PE, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers senior geotechnical engineer with whom she previously interned. “It was her dedication to mentoring and the advancement of the profession that really stood out to me in those early days and has continued to impress me,” said Adams. “She is always talking with others to solicit their input, leverage their experience, inspire them to get involved, and to think of their contribution in a different way.”
Indeed, Corn revels in lifting others and encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones. As she said at a USSD presentation, “If you hang out with me for too long, I’ll brainwash you into believing in yourself and knowing you can achieve anything in life.”
Her enthusiasm for engineering has inspired others to volunteer for leadership positions and present at national conferences. “Her passion for the industry is infused into her DNA,” says Jeremy Begley, PE, a fellow structural engineer at Gannett Fleming who credits his involvement as a conference presenter and university lecturer to Corn.
At Gannett Fleming, Corn analyzes existing concrete dams and reinforced-concrete hydraulic structures. She has a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from Seattle University and a Master of Science in civil engineering from Colorado State University.
