Reflecting the firm’s breadth of services and extensive geographic reach, American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) chapters in four states and the District of Columbia honored Gannett Fleming for engineering excellence with 11 project awards. The work was celebrated for strengthening infrastructure, enhancing public safety, raising the profile of the engineering profession, and offering sustainable and economical solutions for clients.

ACEC Maryland honored the Broad Creek Augmentation Conveyance System with the Outstanding Project Award in its 2021 Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) program. The project, a joint venture with Mott MacDonald, involved the design of a new force main, gravity sewer, and pressure sewer from a pump station to a wastewater treatment plant, as well new headworks, emergency storage, and other improvements to increase system capacity. Extensive microtunneling protected historic sites and environmentally sensitive areas. The project was also awarded a 2021 EEA Honor Award by ACEC Metropolitan Washington for its pump station upgrades, headworks improvements at the water reclamation facility, and a new covered equalization storage structure.

ACEC Maryland recognized two other projects with EEA Honor Awards. The Herring Run Trail Emergency Bank and Stream Restoration project stabilized and repaired a damaged streambank and allowed authorities to safely reopen a recreational trail in Baltimore. The I-270/Watkins Mill Road Interchange was a complex project design utilizing practical design elements to limit impacts to the environment and achieve the goals of safety and mobility within a constrained high-traffic-volume corridor.

Gannett Fleming received three awards from ACEC Illinois. The Union Pacific Railroad Bridge 3.49 Over Ashland Avenue project, which replaced a nine-track railroad bridge in southwest Chicago while minimizing disruption to rail operations and the busy urban roadway below, earned an EEA Honor Award. The Lakefront Trail Pedestrian Bridge, for which Gannett Fleming provided structural engineering support to two contractors, also won an EEA Honor Award. The replacement of Metra MDW Bridge Z-100 Over the FoxRiver, which carries two tracks underneath an overhead highway bridge, was honored with a Merit Award.

ACEC New Jersey recognized the New Gretna Toll Plaza Improvements, which added Express E-ZPass capabilities to a tolling facility within the Pinelands National Reserve, with a 2021 EEA Distinguished Award.

Finally, as reported earlier this year, ACEC Pennsylvania named Gannett Fleming the winner of the Grand Conceptor Award, its highest honor, for the SR 422 Emergency Sinkhole Repair, as well as two Diamond Awards for the rehabilitation of the Penn Street Bridgeand the new Southport Auto Terminal at PhilaPort.
