SR 422 Emergency Sinkhole Repair

SR 422 Emergency Sinkhole Repair

Gannett Fleming designed the SR 422 Emergency Sinkhole Repair for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation District 8-0 (PennDOT). When a large sinkhole closed a main thoroughfare in Palmyra, Pennsylvania, PennDOT and Gannett Fleming developed an innovative solution to support a rebuilt roadway over the karst limestone formations. The design and construction of a 280-foot-long, 2-foot-deep slab supported by 84 micropiles enabled PennDOT to safely reopen Route 422 just 18 weeks after the highway’s closure. This innovative solution provides a design that can be monitored, minimizes disruptions to travel, and provides long-term protection against future closures.

Penn Street Bridge

Penn Street Bridge

The historic rehabilitation of the Penn Street Bridge in Reading, Pennsylvania, transformed a deteriorating structure into what the local media called an “impressive gateway to the city.” Guided by community input and Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation, the design team retained the iconic appearance of the 100-year-old concrete arch bridge while enhancing its structural integrity, extending its service life, and improving safety for motorists and pedestrians.

Southport Auto Terminal at PhilaPort

Southport Auto Terminal at PhilaPort

The new Southport Auto Terminal at PhilaPort more than doubles the facility’s automobile throughput capacity, making it the preeminent distribution point for cars and other roll-on/roll-off cargo on the East Coast. The terminal’s 108,000-square-foot vehicle processing center prepares more than 1,000 cars daily for distribution to dealers across the country. The entire 155-acre terminal can accommodate 350,000 cars a year. Gannett Fleming provided construction management services for site preparation and terminal construction.
